BepInEx for Gorilla Tag – Mod Loader Setup (5.4.23.6)

Almost every PC mod for Gorilla Tag is a BepInEx plugin, so BepInEx is the first thing you install and the last thing you think about. It’s an open-source project (described on GitHub as a “Unity / XNA game patcher and plugin framework”) maintained by the BepInEx team, not by anyone in the Gorilla Tag scene. It’s used across hundreds of Unity games.
What it does for Gorilla Tag
BepInEx hooks into the game when it starts and loads any plugin DLLs it finds in BepInEx/plugins. It also gives mods a shared config system (BepInEx/config/*.cfg) and a log file, which is the first place to look when a mod won’t load. Libraries like Utilla, Computer Interface and Newtonsoft.Json all sit on top of it.
Version and download
- Project: github.com/BepInEx/BepInEx (LGPL-2.1)
- Latest stable on GitHub: 5.4.23.6, released October 23, 2026
- File you want:
BepInEx_win_x64_5.4.23.6.zip. Gorilla Tag on Steam is a 64-bit Windows game, so ignore the x86, Linux and macOS builds. - Platform: PC only. It doesn’t run on a standalone Quest.
Gorilla Tag mods target the 5.x line. The 6.x builds are pre-release and most Gorilla Tag plugins aren’t written for them.
Installing it
- Find your game folder. In Steam: right-click Gorilla Tag → Manage → Browse local files.
- Extract the x64 zip there, so
winhttp.dll,doorstop_config.iniand theBepInExfolder sit next toGorilla Tag.exe. - Start the game once and quit. That run creates
BepInEx/plugins,BepInEx/configand the log. - Now drop mods into
BepInEx/plugins.
Monke Mod Manager can do all of this for you if you’d rather not touch the folder.
When it doesn’t work
- No
pluginsfolder after launching: the files ended up in a subfolder.winhttp.dllhas to be in the same folder as the exe. - Antivirus removed
winhttp.dll: restore it and add an exception. That file is how BepInEx gets loaded. - Game crashes after an update: usually a plugin, not BepInEx. Empty
pluginstemporarily and add mods back one at a time. Our BepInEx troubleshooting guide goes through it in more detail. - Want to remove mods: delete
winhttp.dlland the game launches vanilla.
